Al Majaz - The Nostalgic Cultural Centre of Sharjah

Face projections as part of Sharjah Light Festival back in 2016

Its yet another quaint Saturday evening of the weekend. We're finally in the month of October, a signal that the year is almost about to come to an end. As I take a stroll down the roads of Al Majaz from my last Toastmasters meeting, I feel a deep sense of nostalgia. It is the kind of nostalgia that gives me a lot of flashbacks to the prominence of this area once upon time.

The first memory that comes to my mind is the prominent Al Batha Tower. I'm drawn back to the days when this tower was a meeting point for group picnics/events. We would use this as our meeting point for picnics in Abu Dhabi and elsewhere. The building even housed the once famous Caesar's restaurant! The restaurant was well-known for its exquisite 5 star dining experience. On several events, I remember quite distinctly having dined at the restaurant to celebrate different occasions. On one occasion, my sister and I celebrated our birthdays here in the presence of our cousins who were in town those days. On another occasion, when we performed well in school, we dined here to try out their famous sizzlers which this restaurant was well known for. To celebrate the occasion, we were given a lagoon-facing view which helped make our experience very memorable. And the last occasion I can remember, was when the Valentine's day was celebrated here more than 10 years ago. I won't forget the fresh red roses my parents were given to commemorate this occasion.

Infinity Tunnel installation as part of Sharjah Light Festival

On strolling further I had some more flashbacks. The next one was related to Al Majaz Waterfront. Back in the day, this place was a bustling centre of activities with events ranging from Earth Hour, to Winter Wonderland, the Light Festival and so much more - apart from the regular fountains. I even remember on one occasion for the Light Festival, there were artists/performers engaged from Spain who were using 'fire' as an element to perform acrobatics activities which was well aligned with the theme of - fire and water. On another occasion, there was even a light tunnel or 'Infinity tunnel', which was illuminated with more than thousand lights, and once a 3D model on which our faces were projected - all done to celebrate the Sharjah Light Festival.

The last and final memory, that came to mind was First Avenue Cafe . This was a place which once served as a meetup for small parties and events, usually closer to the winter months. This even had an outdoor seating too which was suitable for the winter months to get the cold breeze and experience the light temperatures that characterize this season. Unfortunately, this cafe has since closed down over the last couple of years, however the memories of this place - still hold true in my mind to this date.

As I kept thinking about all these flashback - I came to realize one thing - there's so much that has changed over the course of time - as either residents have moved abroad, or they have shifted to Dubai or other cities that now have the same charm that this area used to have in the yesteryears. Al Majaz  will always remain in my memory to this date as - the Nostalgic Cultural Centre of Sharjah!

Overcoming the Mental Block

Fifteen years ago, I was asked by my school teacher to give a 1-minute speech for the English class. Those days, it felt terrifying to be called upon in-front of the class to deliver such speech. The topic was about myself – more or less like the ice-breakers we deliver here at the Toastmasters. Being in a school and the ‘studious environment’, I worked with my mother to put together a short speech about myself just to accommodate in for the 1 minute that was allotted to me. I was called upon by the English teacher to deliver the speech in front of the class. As soon as I came on stage to recite my speech, my mind started to freeze. I felt like things were just blanking out for no fault of my own. As I started to speak about myself – in that fit of nervousness, I forgot what I had to say next. I was perplexed and confused on how to handle the situation. At that moment, when I had forgotten the rest of my speech, I stood there saying….Um…Eh very loudly not knowing what to say next. And...

The Pulao in the Making

It was a Sunday afternoon of another weekend in Goa. Coming home from the long ardous journey, I spent a few minutes sifting through the pages of the local daily.  All of a sudden, I was taken aback by the sumptuous aroma of a Goan dish that filled the entire household as my mum set off to prepare it as part of a huge spread for the feast day. I have no words to describe my love and fascination towards this dish that I now proudly consider on such days as T.G.I.P.D - Thank God It's Pulao Days. With its strong aroma - a culmination of the spices of cardamom, cinnamon, cloves - 'pulao' is but one of the dishes that has grown to occupy a prominence in many Goan households on feast days. Driven by the aroma it brings in, everytime my mum has prepared it, I also drew a liking towards this delicacy. After a lot of convincing with my grandmother, I was finally granted my spot in the vast expansive kitchen. As it is customary in most households, men are not accustomed to be in the...

The True Meaning of Change....

As a preface to this blog article, before you start reading and getting to know the purpose of what I have to share as I write this post, this post is like an auto-biographical account into how I went through the struggles that I had to undergo when coming to Goa, and how did I personally overcome all the challenges that it took for me to adjust to the place and of course the people all around. I do hope that you are left with some great insights that can be an inspiration to yourself and the people all around, and I also wish that you are left with a message that forms the cornerstone of who you are, as well as your existence.... Change. This was a word, which I really struggled to come to terms with myself and how I would go about with my day to day life. It is something that I really feared right from the time I was born, I attended school, spent all my life in UAE, and then moved to Goa for my higher studies. All through my life, I had gone through a lot of instances and situations...
